比较状语从句的省略和替代：
比较状语从句因存在相同性质的比较对象，所以常会出现表达的重复，为避免这种情况的发生，比较状语从句中会经常使用替代和省略的手段：
例如：
James enjoys the theater more than Susan enjoys the theater .(无省略或替代）
James enjoys the theater more than Susan enjoys it .(代词替代）
James enjoys the theater more than Susan does .(动词替代）
James enjoys the theater more than Susan.(省略谓语）
James enjoys the theater more.(省略从句）
例句1:
In order to keep fit,you oughtn’t to eat more than is good for you.
【译文】为了保持健康，你不应该多吃。
【注释】is前省略了从句主语what。
例句2:
There ought to be less anxiety over the perceived risk of getting cancer than exists in the public mind today.
【译文】在当今公众的印象里，感觉患上癌症的风险性很大，实际上人们不应该如此忧虑。
【注释】exists前面亦省略了从句主语what或者说省略了the anxiety that。
例句3:
They usually have less money at the end of the month than they have at the beginning.
【译文】在月底的时候，他们的钱通常会比月初的时候少。
【注释】have后面省略了从句的宾语money;实际上此句话可进一步省略为…than they do at the beginning.
例句4：
Contrast may make something appear more beautiful than it is when seen alone
【译文】对比或许会让事物看上去比单独存在时更美。
【注释】it is后省略了 beautiful。
例句5:
The boy spent as much time watching TV as he did studying.
【译文】这个男孩看电视和学习花的时间一样多。
【注释】did是代动词，替代前面的spent much time.
例句6:
There are other reasons in addition to a computer failure that the rocket did not take off as（ ）scheduled.
【译文】火箭不能按预期发射，除了电脑故障还有一些其它方面原因。
【注释】as引导比较状语从句，后面省略了 it had been，其中的it指代the rocket。
例句7：
It‘s all part of the Wal-Mart way of life as ( )laid down by Sam.
【译文】如同山姆所设计的那样，它完全是沃尔玛生活方式的一部分。
【注释】as引导比较状语从句，后面省略了 it is，其中的it和前面的it是同一意义。
例句8:

【译文】当他们偶尔把一个失去知觉的人推到岸边时，更大的可能是出于好奇或游戏， 就像它们追逐被船首犁开的浪花一样。
【注释】as引导比较状语从句，后面省略了 they do。
例句9:

【注释】 as 后面省略 了 one country takes upon itself the role of "defending competition"。
例句10:
As ( )with all new high technology，while the West concerns itself with the "how"，the question of for whom is put aside once again.
【译文】就像对待所有的高新技术一样，西方在致力于如何做的时候，再一次忽略了为谁做这一问题。
【注释】As引导比较状语从句，后面省略了 it is，其中的it指代后面的主句内容。
