鉴于并列结构中经常出现两个或两个以上对象的并列，所以在做阅读理解和翻译时，对它们身份的辨认就显得格外重要，否则就会出现理解上的偏差，乃至错误的出现。

试分析下句并找出并列对象：

There was the determination of an immigrant to gain in the new world what had been denied to him in the old，and on the part of his children an urge to throw off the immigrant onus (负担)by still more success and still more rise in a fluid and classless society.

【结构分析】 There was the determination(of an immigrant) (to gain in the new world what had been denied to him in the old)，and {on the part of his children} an urge (to throw off the immigrant onus(负担)by still more success and still more rise in a fluid and classless society).

此句整体而言是个 there be 结构：There was the determination...... and {on the part of his children} an urge. . .，可见 the determination 和 an urge 是并列对象；前面说的是 “immigrant”，后面说的是“children”，on the part of his children是范围状语，其他括号里的表 达都是后置定语。

【参考译文】外来的移民有决心在这块新大陆上取得在旧大陆他们被剥夺的一切；而他们的孩子则渴望在这样一个没有阶级差异的自由社会取得更大的成功和进步，以此方式，来 摆脱移民的身份。

基于上述例子，读者会发现并列对象的锁定有时并非一件易事，它需要你对句子结构有着较强的分析能力。但整体来讲，并列对象的锁定需要你首先锁定并列连接词，再确定连接词后的中心表达，最后根据此中心表达往前面去找对应的表达，即并列对象。

例如：

He was, above all, a man who experimented： (who despised the prejudices and book learning of the Aristotelians)，(who put his questions to nature instead of to the ancients)，and (who drew his conclusions fearlessly).

【译文】最重要的是，他是一位试验工作者：他鄙视亚里士多德学派的偏见和空洞的书本知识，他向自然界而不是向古人提出问题，并且他还敢于得出自己的结论。

Carlyle was entirely ignorant of what the bottle in his pocket contained，of the nature of the illness (from which his friend was suffering)，and of what had previously been wrong with his wife.
