A long time ago in Nepal, I went on atrip to trek up to Mount Everest First, I had to take a14-hour bus ride from Kathmandu, Nepal's capital, to the farthest village whichthe road goes to, called Jiri.

那条路叫Jiri(吉里)。

The next day, I started thetrek.  Although I had planned to trek onmy own, I had met another foreigner on the bus, also from England, so we agreedto trek to Everest together.

We started the trek on January6th.  About 3 days' trekking fromEverest, we slept overnight at a small Sherpa woman's house which faced areally special Sherpa Buddhist monastery, called Tyangboche monastery.  I had wanted to visit this monastery for somany years, after reading about it in travel books and seeing photos ofit.  So the next morning, even though itfelt freezing cold, I went outside to take photographs of it.  I didn't go inside, because I was contentjust to view it from the outside.

On January 19th, we finally arrived at an areacalled Gorak Shep, from where we could look at Everest, which was facing us.

That night, we slept in a small stonehut which was lived in by a lone Sherpa woman and her child.  She lived there just to serve any trekkerswho were trekking up the mountains to see Everest.

That night, the temperature droppedto -33 degrees, so it was really difficult to sleep because of the cold.  At about 3 a.m. I heard the sound of a largeheavy animal outside.  I could hear itsfeet crunching on the ice and snow, and I could hear it sniffing.  I knew of the locals' belief in the yeti (雪怪)and my imagination wentwild.  I was scared that what was slowlywalking around the hut was a yeti, because at 6,400 meters altitude, it's toohigh for yaks (牦牛)to live there.

The next morning, I looked on theground outside the hut, but the ice and snow was too hard to show anyfootprints, animal or human.

We left the hut at Gorak Shep earlyin the morning and slowly trekked back to Jiri village.  Altogether, the trek to see Mount Everesttook about 21 days.

Two years later, I read in thenewspaper that Tyangboche monastery had been destroyed in an accidental fire,so I was glad that I had the chance to see the original building.  The monastery has been rebuilt.  It's now bigger than the previous one.
